Job Overview

The AI, Media and Democracy (AIMD) initiative is dedicated to establishing a pioneering experimental environment and testing ground for innovative applications of artificial intelligence within the media sector. Collaborating with journalists, media professionals, designers, citizens, researchers, and societal stakeholders, we aim to address the challenges associated with AI integration in media.

This research group merges data science with a robust human-centered, empirical methodology to comprehend user experiences. Our goal is to design and develop advanced intelligent systems that are both empathetic and effective. Our findings are based on realistic testing environments and diverse data sets, exploring areas such as ubiquitous computing, affective computing, and human-AI interaction.

Interactions with AI-generated content significantly influence the human perception of algorithms and the broader dynamics of Human–AI interaction. Particularly, the disclosures related to AI systems can shape users' understanding of media content. With the increasing prevalence of generative AI, there is a pressing concern regarding the potential for manipulated content to disseminate misinformation. A recent effort to mitigate these risks is encapsulated in the European AI Act Proposition, which emphasizes 'Transparency Obligations for Providers and Users of Certain AI Systems and GPAI Models'.

The scope of our research broadly encompasses the effective, trustworthy, and transparent communication of AI system disclosures. We aim to consider ethical and legal implications, design and human factors, as well as policy recommendations. This role may involve collaboration with various stakeholders, including media organizations, policymakers, and AI researchers. Initially, the focus will be on the end-user perspective, with later stages addressing the viewpoints of media organizations and the generative AI media production process.

For this postdoctoral position, we are particularly interested in exploring how trust in AI systems can be fostered through improved user interfaces and a deeper understanding of human-AI interactions at cognitive, behavioral, and physiological levels. By creating user-centric designs for transparent AI disclosures, we can contribute to the foundation of a well-functioning democratic society.

Areas of Interest:

  • Intelligent visualization techniques and adaptive user interfaces that personalize user experiences with media content and associated disclosures.
  • User behavioral and physiological sensing techniques for human-AI interaction, aimed at balancing information overload with essential communication to build user trust in generative AI systems.
  • Development and evaluation of innovative user interfaces for journalism that integrate meaningful disclosure mechanisms for generative AI, enhancing user agency and autonomy.
  • Designing and assessing explainability interfaces for journalists and editors utilizing AI to ensure responsible decision-making.
  • Conducting empirical studies (both online and lab-based) to investigate the relationship between AI disclosures and user perceptions of AI-generated content, for both users and media organizations.

Qualifications:

Candidates should possess a completed PhD in computer science, human-computer interaction, industrial design, cognitive science, or a related discipline. We seek individuals with a strong interest in physiological sensing, signal processing, information visualization, and/or human-centered AI. Experience in social, ethical, or information presentation aspects of AI in the media sector is highly desirable. Candidates should have publications in leading HCI venues such as CHI, CSCW, UbiComp / ISWC, IEEE Vis, FAccT, IUI, or similar.

Essential qualifications include demonstrated research capabilities, a solid technical foundation, and strong academic writing and presentation skills. Proficiency in English is required.

Employment Terms:

The employment conditions are aligned with the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Research Centres. The gross monthly salary for a full-time position, based on relevant experience, ranges from €4,218. The appointment is for a duration of two years.

Employees are entitled to a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8.33%. CWI offers attractive working conditions, including flexible scheduling.
