Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Nederland Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica Voltijd

Position Overview

The AI, Media and Democracy (AIMD) initiative is dedicated to establishing a pioneering experimental environment for innovative applications of artificial intelligence within the media landscape. This project invites collaboration from journalists, media experts, designers, citizens, researchers, and public stakeholders to address the challenges posed by AI in media contexts. Our research focuses on the transformative effects of AI-driven tools on public discourse, civic participation, and competitive dynamics in the media sector, while exploring groundbreaking methodologies for AI integration.

The research team combines advanced data analytics with a robust human-centered, empirical methodology to enhance user experiences. This approach enables the design and development of next-generation intelligent systems that are both responsive and empathetic. Our findings are grounded in realistic testing environments and comprehensive datasets, embracing domains such as ubiquitous computing, affective computing, human-centered multimedia systems, and human-AI interaction.

Interactions with AI-generated content significantly influence user perceptions of algorithms and the broader psychological landscape of Human–AI interaction. Notably, the transparency of AI systems can shape users' understanding of media outputs. As generative AI technologies proliferate, there is an escalating concern regarding the dissemination of manipulated content that may propagate misinformation. A critical response to this challenge is encapsulated in the European AI Act Proposition, which introduces 'Transparency Obligations for Providers and Users of Certain AI Systems and GPAI Models' aimed at enhancing AI system transparency.

The research agenda encompasses the effective, trustworthy, and transparent communication of AI system disclosures. We strive to integrate ethical and legal considerations, design and human factors perspectives, along with policy recommendations. This role may necessitate engagement with various stakeholders, including media organizations, policymakers, and AI researchers. Initially, the focus will be on the end-user perspective (media consumers), progressing to the viewpoints of media organizations and the generative AI production processes.

For this postdoctoral position, we are particularly interested in understanding how trust in AI systems can be fostered through improved user interface design and a deeper comprehension of human-AI interactions at cognitive, behavioral, and physiological levels. By creating user-centric designs for transparent AI disclosures, we aim to contribute to the establishment of a well-functioning democratic society.

Key Areas of Interest:

  • Innovative visualization strategies, adaptive user interfaces (UI), and content personalization that enhance user engagement with media content and associated disclosures.
  • Techniques for sensing user behavior and physiological responses in human-AI interactions, aimed at balancing information delivery to build user trust in generative AI systems.
  • Development and assessment of novel user interfaces for journalism that incorporate effective disclosure mechanisms for generative AI, promoting user agency and autonomy.
  • Design and evaluation of explainability interfaces for journalists and editors utilizing AI, ensuring responsible decision-making.
  • Empirical research (both online and laboratory-based) to explore the relationship between AI disclosures and user perceptions of AI-generated content, benefiting both users and media organizations.

Candidate Requirements:

Applicants should possess a PhD in computer science, human-computer interaction, industrial design, cognitive science, or a related discipline, depending on their specific area of interest. We seek candidates with a strong enthusiasm for physiological sensing, signal processing, information visualization, and/or human-centered AI. Ideally, candidates will have prior experience addressing the social, ethical, or information presentation aspects of AI in the media domain, with publications in leading HCI venues such as CHI, CSCW, UbiComp / ISWC, IEEE Vis, FAccT, IUI, or similar platforms.

Essential qualifications include demonstrated research capability, a solid technical foundation, and proficient academic writing and presentation skills. Candidates must exhibit an excellent command of the English language.

Employment Terms:

The employment conditions adhere to the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Research Centres. The gross monthly salary for a full-time position, contingent on relevant experience, ranges from €4,218. The appointment is for a duration of two years.

Employees are entitled to a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8.33%. The organization offers appealing working conditions, including flexible scheduling.
