Position Overview

The AI, Media and Democracy (AIMD) initiative aims to establish a pioneering experimental environment for innovative applications of artificial intelligence within the media landscape. This collaborative effort involves journalists, media practitioners, designers, citizens, researchers, and public entities addressing the challenges posed by AI in media contexts. Our research examines the transformative effects of AI-driven technologies on public discourse, civic participation, and market competition, while exploring new methodologies for integrating AI into media practices.

Research Focus

Our group merges data science with a robust human-centered approach, emphasizing empirical research to enhance user experiences. This focus enables the design and development of advanced intelligent systems that are both responsive and empathetic. Our findings are grounded in realistic testing environments and comprehensive datasets, covering areas such as ubiquitous computing, affective computing, and human-AI interaction.

Interactions with AI-generated content significantly influence users' perceptions of algorithms and the broader dynamics of Human–AI interaction. Particularly, the transparency of AI systems can shape user attitudes towards media content. With the rise of generative AI, concerns about the dissemination of manipulated content and misinformation have intensified. Recent regulatory efforts, such as the European AI Act Proposition, aim to enhance transparency obligations for AI system providers and users.

Research Objectives

This research will broadly investigate the effective, trustworthy, and transparent communication of AI system disclosures. We will consider ethical and legal implications, design and human factors, as well as policy recommendations. This role may involve collaboration with various stakeholders, including media organizations, policymakers, and AI researchers. Initially, the focus will be on the end-user perspective, transitioning later to the viewpoints of media organizations and the generative AI production process.

For this postdoctoral role, we seek to understand how trust in AI systems can be fostered through improved user interfaces and insights into human-AI interactions at cognitive, behavioral, and physiological levels. By creating user-centric designs for transparent AI disclosures, we aim to contribute to a well-functioning democratic society.

Research Topics of Interest

  • Intelligent visualization techniques and adaptive user interfaces that personalize user experiences and disclosures.
  • User behavioral and physiological sensing methods to balance information delivery and user trust in generative AI systems.
  • Development and assessment of innovative user interfaces for journalism that incorporate meaningful disclosure mechanisms.
  • Design and evaluation of explainability interfaces for journalists and editors to support responsible decision-making.
  • Empirical studies to explore the relationship between AI disclosures and user perceptions of AI-generated content.

Candidate Requirements

Applicants should possess a PhD in computer science, human-computer interaction, industrial design, cognitive science, or a related discipline. We are particularly interested in candidates with a strong background in physiological sensing, information visualization, and human-centered AI. Experience in the social, ethical, or information presentation aspects of AI in media is highly desirable. A track record of publications in leading HCI venues is expected.

Essential qualifications include proven research capabilities, a solid technical foundation, and strong academic writing and presentation skills. Proficiency in English is required.

Employment Terms

The employment conditions align with the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Research Centres. The gross monthly salary for full-time employees, based on relevant experience, ranges from €4,218. The appointment is for a duration of two years.

Employees are entitled to a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8.33%. The organization offers attractive working conditions, including flexible scheduling.
