Job Overview

The AI, Media and Democracy (AIMD) initiative is dedicated to establishing a pioneering environment for experimenting with innovative applications of artificial intelligence in the media landscape. This collaborative space invites journalists, media experts, designers, citizens, researchers, and societal stakeholders to address their challenges in integrating AI within media contexts. Our lab critically examines the implications of AI-driven technologies on public discourse, civic participation, and competitive dynamics in the media sector, while exploring groundbreaking applications of AI.

Our research team merges data science with a robust human-centered and empirical methodology to gain insights into user experiences. This approach empowers us to design and develop the next generation of intelligent and empathetic systems. Our findings are grounded in realistic testing environments and comprehensive datasets, focusing on areas such as ubiquitous computing, affective computing, human-centered multimedia systems, and human-AI interaction.

Interactions with AI-generated content can significantly shape the human experience of algorithms and influence the broader psychology of Human–AI interaction. Notably, disclosures regarding AI systems can affect users' perceptions of media content. With the rise of generative AI, there is an increasing concern about the potential for manipulated content to disseminate misinformation. A recent initiative, the European AI Act Proposition, aims to enhance transparency obligations for providers and users of specific AI systems and models, addressing these critical issues.

The scope of our research focuses on the effective, trustworthy, and transparent communication of AI system disclosures. We aim to incorporate ethical and legal considerations, human factors perspectives, and policy recommendations. This role may involve engaging with relevant stakeholders, including media organizations, policymakers, and AI researchers. Initially, the focus will be on the end-user perspective (media consumers), transitioning later to the viewpoints of media organizations and the generative AI media production process.

For this postdoctoral position, we are particularly interested in exploring how trust in AI systems can be fostered through improved user interfaces and a deeper understanding of human-AI interactions at cognitive, behavioral, and physiological levels. By creating user-centric designs for transparent AI disclosures, we can contribute to the establishment of a well-functioning democratic society.

Areas of Interest:

  • Innovative visualization techniques, adaptive user interfaces (UI), and content personalization that enhance user experiences with media content and associated disclosures.
  • User behavioral and physiological sensing methods for human-AI interaction that help balance information overload with essential information to build user trust in generative AI systems.
  • Development and evaluation of novel user interfaces for journalism that integrate meaningful disclosure mechanisms for generative AI, promoting user agency and autonomy.
  • Designing and assessing explainability interfaces for journalists and editors utilizing AI to ensure responsible decision-making.
  • Conducting empirical studies (both online and in lab settings) to explore the relationship between AI disclosures and user perceptions of AI-generated content, applicable to both users and media organizations.

Qualifications:

Candidates should possess a completed PhD in computer science, human-computer interaction, industrial design, cognitive science, or a related discipline. We seek individuals with a strong interest in physiological sensing, signal processing, information visualization, and/or human-centered AI. Ideally, candidates will have experience with the social, ethical, or information presentation aspects of AI in the media sector and should have publications in leading HCI venues such as CHI, CSCW, UbiComp / ISWC, IEEE Vis, FAccT, IUI, or similar.

Essential qualifications include demonstrated research capability, a solid technical foundation, and strong academic writing and presentation skills. Proficiency in English is required.

Employment Terms:

The employment terms align with the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Research Centres. The gross monthly salary for a full-time position, based on relevant experience, ranges from €4,218. The appointment is for a duration of two years.

Employees are entitled to a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8.33%. The organization offers attractive working conditions, including flexible scheduling.
