About the Project

The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is seeking a motivated research assistant to support a cutting-edge research project exploring the influence of legitimation strategies on public opinion. The project, titled "Justifying the Unjust," aims to examine the (medial) strategies criminal and illicit groups use to justify negative behavior to the public.

As a research assistant, you will contribute to the development and deployment of online survey experiments, screen relevant literature, and help organize a roundtable event to present the research project's findings. This is a unique opportunity to work on a multidisciplinary project that combines sociology, anthropology, political science, and communication science.

About the Role

We are looking for a highly motivated and detail-oriented research assistant with a strong interest in academic research and public opinion. The ideal candidate will have experience with quantitative research, survey design, and/or Qualtrics. You will work closely with the research team to develop and implement the research design, collect and analyze data, and present the findings.

The research assistant will be responsible for:

  • Screening relevant literature on legitimation strategies, public opinion, and moral licensing
  • Helping with the design of a survey experiment and implementing it in Qualtrics
  • Assisting with the development and deployment of a pilot study and collecting data with the survey experiment
  • Helping with organizing a roundtable event to present the research project's findings
About You

We are looking for a candidate with a strong academic background in public administration, criminology, business administration, communication science, organizations science, psychology, economics, or social sciences. You should have a strong interest in academic research and public opinion, as well as experience with empirical research methods.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Strong communication skills in Dutch and English
  • Good team working skills and the ability to work independently
  • Experience with quantitative research, survey design, and/or Qualtrics
  • A willingness to regularly be present in the office at VU Amsterdam
