Research Assistant on Legitimation Strategies and Public Opinion

About the Position

We are seeking a highly motivated research assistant to support a cutting-edge research project on legitimation strategies and public opinion. The project, titled "Justifying the Unjust - A multidisciplinary study exploring and assessing the influence of legitimation strategies for criminal practices on public opinion", aims to examine the strategies used by criminal groups to justify their actions to the public and to assess the effectiveness of these strategies in shaping public opinion.

The research assistant will be responsible for conducting desk research, summarizing relevant literature on topics such as legitimation strategies, public opinion, and moral licensing, and assisting with the design and implementation of online survey experiments. The assistant will also help organize a roundtable event to present the research project's findings.

The research project is conducted collaboratively between the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the University of Twente. The team is multidisciplinary and includes experts from various fields, including sociology, psychology, and communication science.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct desk research and summarize relevant literature on legitimation strategies, public opinion, and moral licensing
  • Assist with the design and implementation of online survey experiments
  • Help organize a roundtable event to present the research project's findings
  • Support the development and deployment of a pilot study and assist with data collection
Requirements
  • Currently pursuing a bachelor or (research) master in the field of public administration, criminology, business administration, communication science, organizations science, psychology, economics, or social sciences more broadly
  • Strong interest in academic research in general and in the topic of legitimation strategies and public opinion in particular
  • Empirical research skills, such as experience with quantitative research, survey design, and/or Qualtrics will be an advantage
  • Willingness and ability to regularly be present in the office at VU Amsterdam
  • Good communication skills (in Dutch and English)
  • Good team working skills and ability to work independently
What We Offer

We offer a challenging position in a socially engaged organization, with a salary of € 2.896,00 (SA) gross per month, on a full-time basis. The position is part of research funded by the VU-UT Alliance Creating Secure Societies societal theme. We also offer attractive fringe benefits and regulations, including a full-time 38-hour working week, 8% holiday allowance, and 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
