Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Nederland VU Amsterdam Voltijd
Job Description

We are seeking two highly motivated PhD students to join our research group at VU Amsterdam, focusing on landscape response to retreating glaciers. The successful candidates will contribute to a NWO-funded project examining the interactions among erosion, topography, and sediment fluxes over millennial timescales in the Western Southern Alps of New Zealand.

Project Overview

The project aims to understand how retreating glaciers shape Earth's surface, with a focus on the impact of climate change on alpine regions. The research will involve a combination of fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and numerical modeling to investigate the dynamics of erosion, sediment transport, and landscape evolution.

Research Objectives
  • Quantify post-glacial erosion and sediment dynamics in the Western Southern Alps of New Zealand.
  • Develop a next-generation landscape evolution model to simulate hillslope processes and fluvial dynamics during deglaciation.
Requirements
  • MSc degree in Earth Sciences or a related field.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to conduct fieldwork and laboratory analysis.
  • Experience with numerical modeling and programming languages (e.g., Python, R).
What We Offer
  • A guaranteed monthly salary of €2,000 before taxes.
  • Tuition fees and funding for fieldwork, analytical expenses, conferences, and travel.
  • Opportunities for professional development and collaboration with international researchers.
How to Apply

Interested candidates should submit their application, including a CV, cover letter, and contact information for two academic references. We welcome applications from diverse backgrounds and encourage underrepresented groups to apply.
