PhD Positions in Landscape Response to Retreating Glaciers
3 weken geleden
We are seeking highly motivated PhD candidates to join our research team at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Our project focuses on understanding the impact of climate change and mountain building on alpine geohazards. You will have the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in Earth Sciences and develop your skills in a dynamic and collaborative environment.
Job Description:Project Overview: Our project aims to investigate the interactions among erosion, topography, and sediment fluxes over millennial timescales in the Western Southern Alps of New Zealand. You will be part of a team that will employ a combination of geochronological techniques, such as 10Be-derived erosion rates, tracer thermochronology, and novel in-situ 14C/10Be ratios as a proxy for landsliding.
Research Objectives: Your research will focus on one of two tightly integrated PhD positions:
- PhD A: Quantifying Post-Glacial Erosion and Sediment Dynamics
- PhD B: Developing a Next-Generation Landscape Evolution Model
Responsibilities: As a PhD candidate, you will be responsible for:
- Conducting fieldwork in the Southern Alps mountains
- Collecting and analyzing samples using geochronological techniques
- Developing and implementing open-source computational models
- Collaborating with the research team to achieve project objectives
Requirements: To be eligible for this position, you should have a MSc degree in Earth Sciences or a related field, and be comfortable working in a team environment. You should also be willing to learn how to conduct lab work and/or implement open-source computational models.
What We Offer: As a PhD candidate at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, you will receive a guaranteed monthly salary of €2,872 before taxes, tuition fees, and funding for field work, analytical expenses, conferences, and travel. You will also have the opportunity to develop your skills in a dynamic and collaborative environment.
How to Apply:To apply for this position, please submit a PDF that includes your CV, a 1-2 page cover letter outlining your background, previous research experience, and qualities that make you ideally suited for this position. You should also specify if you have a preference for one of the two PhD positions, or are interested in both.
Timeline: Applications will remain open until November 15th, and we aim to conduct online interviews in November/December 2024. The start date is negotiable, but ideally in the first half of 2025.
