PhD Researcher in Laser Micro-Printing of Electronic Materials

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join our research team at the University of Twente. The successful candidate will work on laser-based manufacturing techniques for integrated electronic and photonic circuits as part of a large Dutch project, 'Groeifonds NXTGEN HIGHTECH'. This project aims to develop groundbreaking developments in next-generation high-tech equipment to support growth and development of important Dutch high-tech sectors.
The ProjectThe project focuses on laser-based methods for printing ever finer structuring required for bonding and assembly of electronic and photonic chips. Laser-induced forward transfer (LIFT) is an innovative Additive Manufacturing process that can help in printing complex free-standing microstructures. The successful candidate will investigate novel methods for laser-assisted soldering of circuit elements to improve the assembly of heterogeneous systems.
Your RoleYou will work closely with researchers in other groups at the University of Twente and industrial partners in the project. You will have access to renowned research facilities and contribute to the development of novel solutions for societal challenges. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in laser-material processing, material science, photonics, or engineering, and excellent analysis skills and an analytical mind-set.
Requirements- Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, Photonics, Electrical or Materials Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Good knowledge of fundamental aspects of laser-material processing and applied knowledge in laser micromachining.
- Experience in using a range of technologies/techniques for surface characterisation, e.g. SEM, EDX, AFM, etc.
- Ability to work in a laboratory environment and undertake experimental research.
- Good knowledge/demonstrated awareness of (numerical) modelling.
- Excellent analysis skills and an analytical mind-set, as well as excellent communication skills, including written.
- English language proficiency.
- A four-year fulltime PhD position.

- A starting salary of € 2.770,- gross per month in the first year and increasing to € 3.539,- gross per month in the fourth year.
