Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join our research team at the University of Twente. The successful candidate will work on the development of a real-time monitoring approach for laser-based additive manufacturing, focusing on the characterization of the melt pool and its properties.

Background

Laser-based additive manufacturing is a rapidly growing field, offering significant advantages over traditional manufacturing techniques. However, the process is still largely empirical, and there is a need for more accurate and real-time monitoring techniques to optimize the production of high-quality metallic parts.

Responsibilities
  • Develop a real-time monitoring approach for laser-based additive manufacturing
  • Characterize the melt pool and its properties using various sensors and techniques
  • Develop algorithms for sensor fusion and data analysis
  • Closely collaborate with researchers in other groups at the University of Twente
Requirements
  • Master's degree in Optical Engineering, Applied Physics, Photonics, Materials Science, or a closely related discipline
  • Experience in (real-time) imaging and/or real-time spectroscopy
  • Good knowledge of sensor fusion and Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning/Deep Learning concepts
  • Knowledge of fundamental aspects of laser-material processing and applied knowledge in laser-based material processing techniques
  • Ability to work in a laboratory environment and undertake experimental research
  • Excellent analysis skills and an analytical mindset, as well as excellent communication skills, including written
  • English language proficiency
