Project Overview

The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is seeking a highly motivated PhD student to investigate the dynamics of organelles and mRNAs in neurons. The project aims to uncover the mechanisms that ensure the correct localization, capture, and translation of mRNAs in neurons, which is crucial for brain function and the prevention of neurological diseases such as ALS.

Research Objectives
  • Investigate the dynamics of organelles and mRNAs in neurons using live-cell imaging and super-resolution imaging
  • Perform proximity proteomics to identify novel proteins involved in organelle-mRNA interactions
  • Develop and apply novel genetic and imaging tools to study mRNA transport, localization, and translation in neurons
Requirements
  • Master's degree in life sciences, biomedical sciences, or biophysics with neuroscience specialization
  • Hands-on experience with molecular and cellular neuroscience, especially the methods and/or models listed above
  • Hands-on experience with imaging and/or bioinformatics is an advantage
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) and good communication skills
