PhD Researcher in Indigenous Subsistence Harvesting

2 maanden geleden

Groningen, Groningen, Nederland Rijksuniversiteit Groningen Voltijd
Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and qualified PhD researcher to join our team at the University of Groningen. The successful candidate will be part of the TRACES project, a multidisciplinary research initiative that aims to document and contextualize long-term human-animal/human-environment relationships across the ecologically-rich Foxe Basin of central Nunavut.

Research Focus

The PhD researcher will focus on the Western and traditional legal systems regulating the subsistence harvesting of Northern animals by Arctic Indigenous peoples, with a particular emphasis on Inuit of Nunavut and Inuit Nunangat. The researcher will compile, synthesize, and analyze both Indigenous and non-Indigenous animal-harvesting regulations, identifying traditional rules and practices to prevent overharvesting and the extent to which these rules and practices have been challenged by commercialization.

Methodology

The researcher will design and carry out semi-structured, open-ended interviews with Inuit subsistence hunters, other traditional knowledge-holders, conservation biologists, and regulators in Nunavut, elsewhere in Canada, and in Europe. The researcher will also work alongside other TRACES researchers, graduate students, and postgraduate researchers studying a wide array of topics at the Groningen Institute of Archaeology.

Requirements

To be competitive for the position, prospective candidates must have a Master's degree in a relevant legal, humanities, or social science discipline, such as Indigenous Legal Systems, Environmental/Nature-Conservation Law, Anthropology, or Cultural Geography. The candidate must also have the ability to independently research, analyze, and/or summarize relevant laws, statutes, guidelines, and regulations relevant to the project. Additionally, the candidate must be willing to occasionally travel during the PhD project period and have an excellent command of written and spoken English.

Working Conditions

The PhD researcher will be based at the Arctic Centre, part of the Groningen Institute of Archaeology, and will be supervised by TRACES principal investigator Dr. Sean Desjardins and Prof. Kees Bastmeijer. The candidate will work alongside other TRACES researchers and will be expected to conduct a total of 0.4 FTE teaching spread over the second, third, and fourth year of their appointment. The appointment will ideally commence on 1 July, 2024, and the candidate will be employed for a temporary 1.0 FTE appointment for a specified period of four years.
