VU Amsterdam is a world-leading research university dedicated to advancing knowledge and fostering a culture of innovation. Our research focuses on addressing the grand challenges facing our world, from climate change to social inequality. As a PhD researcher in our Materials Science department, you will be part of a vibrant community of scholars who are pushing the boundaries of scientific knowledge.

Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled PhD researcher to join our team working on advanced nanophotonics and materials science. As a PhD researcher, you will be responsible for designing and fabricating novel nanostructures using state-of-the-art modelling and lithography techniques. You will also use time-resolved and steady-state spectroscopic and imaging techniques to study photothermal processes, and design and build experimental setups for light-driven physics and chemistry. Additionally, you will initiate and lead complementary research collaborations with internal and external partners, and disseminate your research through peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations.

Responsibilities

  1. Design and fabricate nanostructures using advanced modelling and lithography techniques
  2. Conduct research on photothermal processes using time-resolved and steady-state spectroscopic and imaging techniques
  3. Design and set up experiments for light-driven physics and chemistry
  4. Lead research collaborations with internal and external partners
  5. Disseminate research findings through peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations

Requirements

To be considered for this position, you must have a Master's degree in physics, physical chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, or a closely related field. A strong background in practical skills in carrying out physical experiments and/or building optical/spectroscopic setups is highly desirable. Prior research experience in nanophotonics, photochemistry, cleanroom fabrication, and/or optical microscopy and spectroscopy is also considered a plus. You must have excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, and a team-player mentality and a kind and social attitude.

What We Offer

We offer a challenging position in a socially engaged organisation, with a salary of € 2,200.00 (PhD) and maximum € 3,000.00 (PhD) gross per month in the fourth year, for a full-time employment. Additionally, we offer an employment contract of initially 1 year, which will be extended to a total of 4 years if there is sufficient perspective. You will have the opportunity to work on a cutting-edge research project, and to contribute to the development of new materials and technologies. You will also have access to a wide range of sports facilities and a comprehensive benefits package.
