The role of hydrogen is increasingly recognized as pivotal in achieving climate neutrality, particularly in sectors that are challenging to decarbonize. Currently, the production of hydrogen through water electrolysis faces significant economic barriers, primarily due to substantial capital expenditures, suboptimal efficiencies, and elevated operational costs linked to electricity consumption. Furthermore, regulatory frameworks necessitate that future electrolyzer installations operate in conjunction with adjacent renewable energy sources, demanding a flexible operational approach.

This research initiative aims to explore the complex interactions among:

  • Electrolyzer technology design, operational flexibility, and associated costs,
  • Various configurations and integration strategies for downstream processes,
  • The capacity of these assets to leverage diverse revenue opportunities within energy and ancillary markets, and
  • Flexibility requirements driven by the synchronization of renewable energy generation with green hydrogen production.

In this context, you will create advanced equilibrium models that depict the interconnected electricity and hydrogen markets, alongside the contributions of different electrolyzer technologies within these frameworks. Building upon existing methodologies and ongoing projects within our research group, you will emphasize the application of data-driven techniques, such as inverse optimization, to enhance the accuracy of market outcome predictions and assess 'model' uncertainties.

This postdoctoral position is part of the WinHy project at TU Delft, which is supported by NWO. Your focus will be on the interaction between electrolyzer assets and the broader energy system, while another position within the project will concentrate on the design aspects of the electrolyzer plants.

The WinHy consortium includes partners such as Repsol, a technology integrator and developer of electrolyzer systems, Sunfire, a prominent manufacturer of electrolyzers, and research institutions like DLR and TU Delft. Together, we aim to overcome the limitations of current alkaline water electrolysis technologies by innovating advanced stack designs and plant integration methodologies. This collaborative effort spans technology development, laboratory experimentation, and the economic integration of energy systems, which is the primary focus of this postdoctoral role.

You will report directly to Kenneth Bruninx and collaborate closely with the research team led by Mar Pérez-Fortes, focusing on the evaluation and implementation of emerging technologies alongside consortium partners. You will become part of a vibrant community of internationally recognized interdisciplinary energy researchers within the Department of Engineering Systems and Services at TU Delft. Qualifications
  • A PhD in science, engineering, or economics (must be obtained by the agreed-upon start date).
  • Strong quantitative and analytical capabilities.
  • A results-driven mindset.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (knowledge of Dutch is not mandatory).
  • Previous research experience in energy system or market modeling, or related energy research.
  • Experience in modeling electrolysis-based plants, techno-economic evaluations, and thermal management is advantageous.

Additional qualifications that would be beneficial include:

  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Julia, Python, or similar.
  • Experience with process modeling tools like Aspen Plus, gPROMS, or equivalent.
