Position Overview

Hydrogen's Role in Climate Neutrality: Hydrogen is anticipated to be crucial in achieving climate neutrality, particularly in sectors that are challenging to decarbonize. Currently, the production of hydrogen through water electrolysis faces significant economic barriers, primarily due to substantial capital investments, inefficiencies, and high operational costs linked to electricity consumption.

Research Focus: This research initiative aims to explore the intricate relationships between:

  • Electrolyzer technology design, operational flexibility, and associated costs.
  • Various configurations and downstream integration strategies.
  • The capacity of the asset to leverage diverse revenue streams in energy and secondary markets.
  • Flexibility requirements dictated by the synchronization of renewable electricity generation with green hydrogen production.

Methodological Approach: You will be tasked with developing advanced equilibrium models that illustrate the interconnectedness of electricity and hydrogen markets, alongside the contributions of different electrolyzer technologies within these frameworks. Building upon existing methodologies and ongoing research within our team, you will emphasize the application of data-driven techniques, such as inverse optimization, to enhance the realism of market outcomes and assess 'model' uncertainties.

Collaboration and Environment: This postdoctoral role is part of a larger initiative funded by the WinHy project at TU Delft. You will collaborate closely with a diverse research group, focusing on the interaction between electrolyzer assets and the broader energy system. Your daily supervisor will be Kenneth Bruninx, and you will engage with a vibrant community of interdisciplinary energy researchers.

Qualifications
  • A PhD in science, engineering, or economics (must be awarded by the agreed-upon starting date).
  • Strong quantitative and analytical capabilities.
  • A results-driven mindset.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (Dutch proficiency is not required).
  • Prior research experience in energy system or market modeling, or related energy research.
  • Experience in modeling electrolysis-based plants, techno-economic assessments, and heat management is advantageous.

Preferred Skills:

  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Julia, Python, or similar.
  • Experience with process modeling tools like Aspen Plus, gPROMS, or equivalents.
Employment Conditions

Compensation and benefits are aligned with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. TU Delft offers a customizable benefits package, including health insurance discounts and a monthly work-related expense contribution. Flexible working arrangements can be accommodated.
