Postdoctoral Researcher in Electrolyzer Market Dynamics

Delft, Zuid-Holland, Nederland TU Delft Voltijd
Job Overview

The role of hydrogen is increasingly recognized as pivotal in achieving climate neutrality, particularly in sectors that are challenging to decarbonize. Currently, the production of hydrogen through water electrolysis faces significant economic barriers, primarily due to high capital expenditures, suboptimal efficiencies, and elevated operational costs associated with electricity consumption. Furthermore, regulatory frameworks necessitate that future electrolyzer initiatives synchronize with adjacent renewable energy sources, which demands a flexible operational approach for the electrolyzer facilities.

This research initiative aims to explore the intricate relationships among:

  • Electrolyzer technology design, adaptability, and associated costs,
  • Various configurations and downstream integration strategies,
  • The potential for the asset to leverage diverse revenue streams from energy and secondary markets,
  • Flexibility requirements driven by the need to align renewable energy generation with green hydrogen production.

To tackle these challenges, you will create advanced equilibrium models that illustrate the interconnected electricity and hydrogen markets, alongside the roles of various electrolyzer technologies within these frameworks. Building upon existing methodologies and ongoing projects within our research team, you will emphasize how data-centric techniques, such as inverse optimization, can enhance the accuracy of market outcomes and assess uncertainties inherent in the models.

This postdoctoral opportunity is part of the WinHy project at TU Delft, which is funded by NWO. This specific position concentrates on the interactions between electrolyzer assets and the broader energy system, while another position focuses on the design aspects of the electrolyzer plant.

The WinHy consortium includes partners such as Repsol, a leader in technology integration and electrolyzer plant development, Sunfire, a prominent manufacturer of electrolyzers, and research institutions DLR and TU Delft. The aim is to address the limitations of current alkaline water electrolysis technologies by innovating advanced stack designs and plant integration concepts. This collaborative effort spans from technological development and laboratory experiments to energy system and economic integration, which is the core focus of this postdoctoral role.

You will report directly to Kenneth Bruninx and collaborate closely with the research group led by Mar Pérez-Fortes, focusing on the evaluation and implementation of emerging technologies alongside consortium partners. You will become part of a vibrant community of internationally recognized interdisciplinary energy researchers within the Department of Engineering Systems and Services at TU Delft. Our faculty values diversity and encourages candidates from various backgrounds and disciplines to contribute to our innovative environment.

Candidate Requirements
  • PhD in science, engineering, or economics (must be obtained by the agreed-upon start date).
  • Strong quantitative and analytical capabilities.
  • A results-driven mindset.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (Dutch language skills are not mandatory).
  • Previous research experience in energy system or market modeling, or related energy research.
  • Experience in modeling electrolysis-based plants, techno-economic assessments, and heat management is advantageous.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Julia, Python, or similar.
  • Experience with process modeling tools like Aspen Plus, gPROMS, or equivalent.
Employment Conditions

Compensation and benefits align with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. TU Delft offers a customizable benefits package, health insurance discounts, and a monthly contribution for work-related expenses. Flexible working arrangements can be negotiated.

For international candidates, TU Delft provides relocation assistance through the Coming to Delft Service, which offers resources to help new employees settle in the Netherlands and includes support for partners and networking events.
