Job Description

The Faculty of Aerospace Engineering at Delft University of Technology is seeking a highly motivated PhD researcher to work on a project that aims to harness the power of Reinforcement Learning (RL) to enhance air transport planning under uncertainty. The goal is to develop fast, efficient solutions that can be executed in real-time, while ensuring the safety and reliability of air transport operations.

Key Research Areas
  1. Data Representation: The candidate will investigate current state-of-the-art techniques for modeling uncertainty in the training environment and collaborate with aviation experts to determine the most accurate ways to represent uncertainty in RL models.
  2. Explainability: The PhD researcher will explore innovative ways to quantify and improve predictability and explainability of RL models, introducing trustworthy safeguards to increase confidence in RL applications.
  3. Open-Source Software: The outcomes of this PhD will be shared with the broader community, contributing to refining certification guidelines and setting benchmarks for assessing the limitations of RL in real-world aviation scenarios.
Requirements
  • Master's degree in aerospace, computer engineering, mathematics, or related areas.
  • Good proficiency in English (spoken and written).
  • Knowledge of programming in Python.
  • Experience with either aviation, statistics, data science methods, or machine learning.
  • Ability to bridge the gap between research and applications.
Conditions of Employment

The PhD candidate will be offered a 4-year period of employment in principle, with a 1.5-year contract followed by a 2.5-year contract, assuming satisfactory performance.

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from €2872 per month in the first year to €3670 in the fourth year.
