The goal is to develop fast, efficient solutions that can be executed in real-time, while ensuring the safety and reliability of air transport operations.
Key Research Areas- Data Representation: The candidate will investigate current state-of-the-art techniques for modeling uncertainty in the training environment and collaborate with aviation experts to determine the most accurate ways to represent uncertainty in RL models.
- Explainability: The PhD researcher will explore innovative ways to quantify and improve predictability and explainability of RL models, introducing trustworthy safeguards to increase confidence in RL applications.
- Open-Source Software: The outcomes of this PhD will be shared with the broader community, contributing to refining certification guidelines and setting benchmarks for assessing the limitations of RL in real-world aviation scenarios.
- Master's degree in aerospace, computer engineering, mathematics, or related areas.
- Good proficiency in English (spoken and written).
- Knowledge of programming in Python.
- Experience with either aviation, statistics, data science methods, or machine learning.
- Ability to bridge the gap between research and applications.
The PhD candidate will be offered a 4-year period of employment in principle, with a 1.5-year contract followed by a 2.5-year contract, assuming satisfactory performance.
Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from €2872 per month in the first year to €3670 in the fourth year.
