Your Role

As a PhD researcher in the field of nanoscale photothermal processes, you will be part of a dynamic research team at VU Amsterdam. Your primary objective will be to advance the fundamental understanding of nanoscale photothermal heating, exploring new strategies for controlling heat at the smallest scales using light.

Your Responsibilities
  • Design and fabricate nanostructures using modeling and lithography techniques
  • Investigate photothermal processes using time-resolved and steady-state spectroscopic and imaging techniques
  • Develop experimental setups for light-driven physics and chemistry
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to initiate and lead research projects
  • Disseminate research findings through peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations
  • Supervise and mentor bachelor and master students during their internships and assist with teaching courses
Your Profile
  • Master's degree in physics, physical chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, or a closely related field
  • Practical experience in carrying out physical experiments and/or building optical/spectroscopic setups is highly desirable
  • Prior research experience in nanophotonics, photochemistry, cleanroom fabrication, and/or optical microscopy and spectroscopy is considered a plus
  • Familiarity with computational tools and data analysis software is a plus
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English are essential
  • A team-player mentality and a kind and social attitude are highly valued

  • A salary of € 2,000 (PhD) and maximum € 3,000 (PhD) gross per month in the fourth year
  • An employment contract of initially 1 year, extendable to 4 years with a dissertation at the end of the fourth year
