PhD Position in Earth Deformation Modelling

Job Description

The Earth's surface is constantly changing due to various geological processes. One of the most significant changes is the glacial isostatic adjustment, which occurs when large ice sheets shrink, causing the Earth's surface to uplift. This process provides a unique opportunity to study the Earth's mantle and its response to changes in loading. In this project, you will use advanced numerical models to simulate the Earth's deformation and analyze the results in comparison with observational data. The goal is to better understand the Earth's surface dynamics and make predictions about future uplift in a deglaciating world.

Requirements
  • Master's degree in Earth sciences, physics, applied mathematics, engineering, computer science, or a related field.
  • Strong skills in numerical modelling, solid mechanics, and/or analysing geodetic data.
  • Experience working with Fortran, Python, or Matlab.
  • A demonstrable interest in Earth surface dynamics, glacial isostatic adjustment, or mantle deformation.
  • Good organizational skills and ability to work independently.
  • Good command of written and spoken English.
Conditions of Employment

As a PhD candidate at TU Delft, you will be offered a 4-year period of employment in principle, but in the form of 2 employment contracts. An initial 1.5-year contract with an official go/no-go progress assessment within 15 months. Followed by an additional contract for the remaining 2.5 years assuming everything goes well and performance requirements are met.

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from € 2872 per month in the first year to € 3670 in the fourth year. As a PhD candidate, you will be enrolled in the TU Delft Graduate School, which provides an inspiring research environment with excellent supervision, academic staff, and a mentor. The Doctoral Education Programme is aimed at developing your transferable, discipline-related, and research skills.

TU Delft offers a customizable compensation package, discounts on health insurance, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged. For international applicants, TU Delft has the Coming to Delft Service, which provides information for new international employees to help you prepare the relocation and settle in the Netherlands. The Coming to Delft Service also organizes events to expand your (social) network.
