Postdoctoral Researcher in Efficient Modeling of Cracking between Bonded Thermoplastic Composites

Thermoplastic composites are a promising material for the future of automotive and aerospace industries, offering a lightweight solution to reduce fuel consumption and extend vehicle range. To fully utilize these materials, efficient integration techniques are required to manufacture bonded parts. The ENLIGHTEN research program, funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO), aims to develop integrated lightweight structures with thermoplastic composites, involving academic and industrial partners.
This postdoctoral research project is part of the ENLIGHTEN program, focusing on predicting the performance of thermoplastic composites using advanced computational tools. The project aims to develop a macroscale model for debonding in stiffened panels, utilizing a new higher-order finite element formulation to efficiently model large-scale debonding with a cohesive zone model. The project is closely related to other ongoing efforts in ENLIGHTEN, including mesoscale model developments and planned experiments on stiffened panels.
Requirements- A PhD degree in a relevant field (Civil Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering) with a focus on computational mechanics
- Proven ability to formulate, implement, and test original numerical methods for simulation of solid materials or structures
- Independence, eagerness to learn, and an openness to communicate and collaborate with other researchers
- Excellent command of English, both verbally and in writing
- Experience with fiber-reinforced composite materials and/or cohesive zone modeling is an advantage
