Job Description

Research Project: VANGOGH

This position is part of the research project VANGOGH, which aims to unravel and predict the degradation of canvas paintings using a multiscale and multiphysics framework. The project is funded by the European Research Council (ERC Starting Grant) and is a collaborative effort between the Eindhoven University of Technology and the Netherlands Institute for Conservation, Art and Science (NICAS).

Main Objectives:

  • Develop a multiscale hygro-thermo-mechanical constitutive model of paint and canvas materials.
  • Analyze local, microstructural instability mechanisms in the canvas material.
  • Develop a multiscale framework for multiphysics instability of the canvas and cracking and delamination in the paint.

Job Requirements:

  • A talented, motivated, and enthusiastic researcher with analytical skills, initiative, and creativity.
  • A MSc-degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computational Mechanics, Mathematical Engineering, or equivalent.
  • A strong background in mechanics of materials and multi-scale and multi-physics methods.
  • Interest in working in an interdisciplinary project that applies a mechanics mindset to the field of cultural heritage.
  • Excellent oral and writing skills in English.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Full-time employment for four years, with an intermediate evaluation after nine months.
  • Salary and benefits in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, scale P.
  • A year-end bonus of 8.3% and annual vacation pay of 8%.
