Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Nederland AMOLF Voltijd

The ubiquitin processing motor Cdc48/p97 plays a critical role in cellular processes. As an experimental physicist, you will investigate its dynamic action using innovative optical tweezers and single-molecule fluorescence techniques. This project offers a unique opportunity to elucidate the mechanisms underlying this pivotal function, with potential applications in fields such as protein degradation, membrane remodeling, and DNA replication regulation.

Work Activities

Our research group at AMOLF is seeking an outstanding experimental physicist or chemist to join our team. You will work in a collaborative and supportive environment, developing new experimental schemes and analyzing complex temporal data. Your aim will be to elucidate the dynamic mechanisms that underlie the function of Cdc48/p97, and to address fundamental questions about this process.

Key methodologies include:

  1. Optical tweezers to manipulate individual proteins and follow their movements
  2. Single-molecule fluorescence to detect changes in individual molecules at nanometer and millisecond resolution

We collaborate with international teams in Germany, providing complementary in-vitro data. This project offers a unique chance to address fundamental questions in a rapidly expanding field.

Qualifications

We are looking for an outstanding experimental physicist or chemist with a strong background in single-molecule techniques, programming skills to handle complex data, and excellent verbal and written English skills. A Master's degree is required for eligibility for a Dutch PhD examination. The position is available for four years, with a starting salary of €2,781 gross per month and a range of employment benefits.

Work Environment

AMOLF is a leading institute for fundamental research on the physics of complex forms of matter. Our research group is part of a lively and close-knit community of about 10 PhD students and postdocs, working together in small teams on various projects. The Tans group at AMOLF has been at the forefront of studying chaperone-guided protein folding using optical tweezers.

Working Conditions
  • The working atmosphere at the institute is informal and collaborative, with short lines of communication
  • The position is a full-time appointment in the service of NWO-I for four years
  • Several courses are offered for PhD students, and funding is available to attend international conferences
