About the Position
We are seeking a highly motivated and talented PhD researcher to join our team at VU Amsterdam in the field of precision spectroscopy. The successful candidate will have a strong background in physics or physical chemistry and a keen interest in atomic/molecular/optical physics.
The PhD project aims to develop a novel cryogenic ion trap for quantum-logic spectroscopy using H2+ and Be+ ions. This involves designing and building a continuous-wave laser system to laser cool Be+ ions, which are then used for sympathetic cooling of the molecular ions. The molecular ions are selectively prepared by field-ionizing the optically excited molecular Rydberg states of H2.
The researcher will be responsible for developing and implementing advanced experimental techniques, including cryogenics, ultrahigh vacuum, CAD design, optics and lasers, electronics, and scientific programming. The project also involves theoretical work, including the study of molecular Hamiltonian, advanced angular momentum theory, optical Bloch equations, and laser cooling simulations.

About the Benefits

- a salary of € 2,419.00 (PhD) gross per month, on a full-time basis.
- a full-time position (1.0 FTE). Your employment contract will initially last 1 year. If there is sufficient perspective, this will be extended to a total of 4 years.

- A full-time 38-hour working week comes with a holiday leave entitlement of 186 hours per year. If you choose to work 40 hours, you have 96 extra holiday leave hours on an annual basis. For part-timers, this is calculated pro rata.
