PhD Researcher in Quantum Metrology and Spectroscopy

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD researcher to join our team at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. The successful candidate will be part of the Quantum Metrology and Laser Applications group, working on precision measurements of atomic and molecular systems using advanced laser techniques.
The PhD researcher will be responsible for developing and implementing novel quantum technologies for spectroscopy and quantum logic, with a focus on molecular ions. This will involve designing and building experimental setups, developing new methods for laser cooling and trapping, and analyzing data to extract physical insights.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in atomic and molecular physics, with experience in experimental techniques such as laser spectroscopy and ion trapping. A good understanding of quantum mechanics and quantum information processing is also essential.

About the ProjectThe project aims to measure the level structure of weakly-bound molecular states of H2+ with unprecedented accuracy using novel quantum technologies. This will involve developing a novel cryogenic ion trap for quantum-logic spectroscopy using H2+ (spectroscopy) and Be+ (logic) ions.
The PhD researcher will be responsible for designing and building the experimental setup, developing new methods for laser cooling and trapping, and analyzing data to extract physical insights.
About the DepartmentThe Quantum Metrology and Laser Applications group at LaserLaB, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, is a very international group, consisting of some 20 strongly collaborating senior and junior scientists. The group focuses on precision measurements of atomic and molecular systems, using advanced laser techniques as well as techniques to cool the motion of atoms and molecules.

- a salary of minimum € 2.872,00 (PhD) and maximum € 3.670,00 (PhD) gross per month, on a full-time basis. This is based on UFO profile PhD candidate. The exact salary depends on your education and experience.
- a full-time position (1.0 FTE). Your employment contract will initially last 1 year. If there is sufficient perspective, this will be extended to a total of 4 years.

- A full-time 38-hour working week comes with a holiday leave entitlement of 232 hours per year. If you choose to work 40 hours, you have 96 extra holiday leave hours on an annual basis. For part-timers, this is calculated pro rata.
