Groningen, Groningen, Nederland UMCG Voltijd
Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join our interdisciplinary team within the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). Our team has recently received a grant from Schmidt Futures to develop a diamond-based quantum sensing method for assessing the health of bioreactor cultures.

Project Overview

The aim of this project is to bring quantum sensing into the world of biomedical applications. We will develop a novel quantum sensing method to measure the local metabolic activity of yeast cells in bioreactor cultures. This will enable us to assess the health of the bioreactor culture in real-time, providing valuable insights for bioprocess optimization.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement a diamond-based quantum sensing method for bioreactor cultures
  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of biologists, chemists, and physicists to achieve project goals
  • Conduct nanoscale measurements on single cells using our new nanoscale MRI technique
  • Assess the health of bioreactor cultures using our novel quantum sensing method
Requirements
  • Master's degree in biology, biotechnology, or a related field
  • Experience with microscopy, culturing of yeast, and bioreactor operation
  • Strong background in biophysics and/or quantum mechanics
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
What We Offer

We offer a full-time research position for four years, with a gross salary of € 2,901 per month in the first year, increasing to € 3,677 per month in the fourth year. In addition, we offer 8% holiday pay and 8.3% end-of-year bonus. The conditions of employment comply with the Collective Labour Agreement for Medical Centers (CAO-UMC).
