Phd Position in Multiscale Spatiotemporal Modelling of Microbiome During the First 1000 Days of Life

Specifically, are you excited about utilizing computational science methods to investigate the impact of the human microbiome on health and disease?- **What are you going to do?**
- Model Development: Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of researchers to integrate data from cohort studies, metabolomics analyses and in vitro experiments, to develop computational models relying on spatial modelling techniques such as cellular Potts and reaction-diffusion models that capture the interactions between the macroscopic changes in the host environment and the corresponding physical and biological changes in the microbiome.
- Parameter Analysis: Analyse model parameters for interoperability (with other computational models) and interpretability using techniques such as complex network analysis and dimensionality reduction (ordination).
- Intervention analysis: Develop qualitative and quantitative mathematical models to simulate the impact of lifestyle factors (e.g., nutrition, physical activity, sleep behaviour, cultural and environmental factors) on oral health and metabolic health outcomes. Use the simulation outcomes to propose intervention strategies.
- Individual-Level Microbiome Wellness and Immune Fitness Score: Develop a method to arrive at an individual-level microbiome wellness and immune fitness score using the developed mathematical models.

For setting up the mathematical models and simulations, most programming will be in Python and/or C++.

**Your experience and profile**-
- Excellent English communication skills, both written and spoken, are necessary. A willingness to learn and observe wet-lab techniques, in order to better understand their use cases, limitations and potential for model validation, is highly valued.**Our offer**
- A temporary contract for 38 hours per week for the duration of 4 years (the initial contract will be for a period of 18 months and after satisfactory evaluation it will be extended for a total duration of 4 years). The preferred starting date is as soon as possible. This should lead to a dissertation (PhD thesis). We will draft an educational plan that includes attendance of courses and (international) meetings. We also expect you to assist in teaching undergraduates and master students.-
