About the Project

The VU Amsterdam is seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join a research project exploring the selection process of political elites in Europe. This interdisciplinary project, funded by the Dutch Research Council NWO, aims to investigate how personality traits influence the selection process for politicians.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and conduct a quantitative panel study on the ambition and success of local politicians
  • Analyse quantitative data on personality traits valued by citizens in politicians
  • Contribute to data collection throughout all stages of the project, including surveying national MPs online and in person, coding personality traits at a distance, and collecting biographical background information on MPs
  • Write and submit scientific articles to peer-reviewed journals, forming the basis of your dissertation

Requirements

  • A master's degree in political science or a related discipline
  • Proficiency in quantitative methods and research design
  • Programming skills (e.g., Stata, R, Python)
  • Excellent oral and written English skills, with a willingness to learn Dutch if necessary
