This interdisciplinary PhD project delves into the question of why boys exhibit less interest in caregiving roles. It investigates the gender disparities in the socialization of care responsibilities influenced by parents and peers.

What will you do?

Despite significant advancements towards gender equality, men remain notably underrepresented in caregiving positions across various sectors such as healthcare, primary education, and domestic environments. This trend results in numerous vacancies and untapped talent within these fields. The roots of gender inequality in caregiving roles can be traced back to middle childhood (ages 6 to 8), where boys often aspire to become police officers or firefighters, while girls tend to aim for roles such as teachers, nurses, or mothers. During this developmental stage, boys begin to perceive themselves as less communal (e.g., caring, warm, nurturing) and more agentic (e.g., independent, assertive, dominant) compared to girls. Additionally, this period is marked by the emergence of stereotypical expectations regarding male and female attributes, as well as a more nuanced understanding of gender identity.

The objective of this PhD project is to uncover the developmental mechanisms contributing to men's underrepresentation in caregiving roles. We will focus on the crucial self-concept formation phase during middle childhood within family and educational settings, which serve as primary agents in the socialization of gender roles. Employing a mixed-methods, three-wave longitudinal design, we aim to capture shifts in gender beliefs and career aspirations.

Our initial goal is to investigate how a consistent network of gender beliefs regarding communion and agency develops during middle childhood and its correlation with children's career aspirations. Furthermore, we will explore how gender socialization practices within family and peer contexts influence the formation of children's gender beliefs and career aspirations. Specifically, we will assess whether children exposed to less traditional parental gender role models (in terms of occupation, work hours, or task division) develop less conventional gender beliefs and career aspirations. We will also examine the potential drawbacks for children whose parents reverse traditional gender roles. Regarding peer interactions, we will analyze whether children who engage more with peers of the opposite gender (and less with same-gender peers) cultivate less traditional gender beliefs and career aspirations through processes such as learning about the opposite gender and broadening their behavioral repertoire.

In this project, we will gather mixed-methods data through annual assessments at ages 6, 7, and 8 to track the evolution of gender beliefs during middle childhood. We plan to include 150 Dutch families, recruited through various channels to ensure a diverse sample in terms of background variables.

  • holds (or is nearing completion of) a (Research) Master's degree in pedagogical sciences, developmental psychology, social psychology, or a related discipline;

  • is familiar with programming questionnaire surveys and experimental tasks;
  • possesses knowledge in the field of gender inequality and socialization;
  • exhibits strong interpersonal skills;
  • is efficient, effective, and capable of conceptual thinking;
  • can meet deadlines and conduct research independently as well as collaboratively;
  • has proficient communication skills in both written and spoken English and Dutch, with fluency in Dutch necessary for supervising data collection with children and parents.

What do we offer?

  • A full-time gross salary ranging from €2,770 to €3,539 based on the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities;
  • 8% holiday pay and an additional year-end bonus;

  • Integration into an international network of scholars focused on the underrepresentation of men in caregiving roles;
  • An opportunity to collaborate within a small research team with streamlined communication;
