Position Overview:

The Faculty of Social Sciences at Utrecht University is seeking a PhD candidate for an interdisciplinary research project focused on gender differences in the socialization of care roles among children. This project aims to investigate why boys show less interest in care-related professions during their formative years.

Research Objectives:

The primary goal of this PhD project is to uncover the developmental factors contributing to the underrepresentation of men in health care, education, and domestic roles. We will examine the critical period of middle childhood (ages 6-8) and how family and school environments influence gender role socialization.

Methodology:

Utilizing a mixed-methods, longitudinal approach, we will assess the evolution of gender beliefs and career aspirations over three years. Key research questions include:

  • How do boys and girls develop distinct networks of gender beliefs regarding communal and agentic traits?
  • What role do family dynamics and peer interactions play in shaping children's perceptions of gender roles?
  • How does exposure to non-traditional gender role models affect children's career aspirations?

Candidate Profile:

We are looking for a candidate who:

  • Holds (or is close to obtaining) a Master's degree in pedagogical sciences, developmental psychology, social psychology, or a related discipline.
  • Has experience with quantitative research methodologies, including longitudinal studies and statistical analysis.
  • Is proficient in programming survey instruments and conducting experimental tasks.
  • Possesses knowledge of gender inequality and socialization theories.
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Is fluent in English and Dutch, with the capability to engage with Dutch-speaking participants.
