This interdisciplinary PhD project investigates the reasons behind the lack of male participation in care professions, focusing on the socialization of care roles among boys during their formative years.

Project Objectives:

Despite significant advancements towards gender equality, men remain significantly underrepresented in care professions such as healthcare, primary education, and domestic roles. This shortage not only leads to unfilled positions but also results in untapped talent in these vital sectors. The roots of this gender disparity can be traced back to early childhood, where boys often aspire to roles such as police officers or firefighters, while girls tend to gravitate towards careers in teaching, nursing, or motherhood.

Our research aims to uncover the developmental mechanisms that contribute to men's limited involvement in care roles. We will concentrate on the critical period of self-concept formation in middle childhood (ages 6-8), examining the influence of family and educational environments in shaping gender roles. Utilizing a mixed-methods, three-wave longitudinal design, we will track changes in gender beliefs and career aspirations over time.

Research Focus:

1. Investigate the development of gender beliefs related to communion and agency during middle childhood and their correlation with children's career aspirations.

2. Analyze how gender socialization practices within family and peer contexts influence the formation of children's gender beliefs and career aspirations. We will explore whether children exposed to non-traditional parental gender roles develop less conventional gender beliefs and aspirations.

3. Assess the impact of peer interactions on gender belief development, particularly among children who engage more with peers of the opposite gender.

Data will be collected through annual assessments of 150 Dutch families, ensuring a diverse sample in terms of background variables such as family structure, education, and ethnicity.

Candidate Profile:

We seek an individual who:

  • Holds (or is close to completing) a (Research) Master's degree in pedagogical sciences, developmental psychology, social psychology, or a related discipline.
  • Possesses experience and interest in quantitative research methodologies, including longitudinal surveys and statistical analysis.
  • Is familiar with programming survey instruments and experimental tasks.
  • Has foundational knowledge in gender inequality and socialization.
  • Exhibits strong interpersonal skills and effective communication abilities in both English and Dutch.
  • Can work independently and collaboratively within a research team.
