This interdisciplinary PhD project investigates the reasons behind boys' lack of interest in caregiving roles, focusing on gender differences in socialization by parents and peers.

Key Responsibilities:

Despite advancements in gender equality, men remain significantly underrepresented in caregiving professions, such as healthcare, primary education, and domestic roles. This situation leads to numerous vacancies and untapped talent in these essential fields. The roots of gender disparities in caregiving roles can be traced back to early childhood, where boys often aspire to become police officers or firefighters, while girls aim to be teachers, nurses, or mothers. Additionally, boys begin to perceive themselves as less nurturing and more assertive compared to girls during this formative period.

The objective of this PhD project is to explore the developmental processes contributing to men's underrepresentation in caregiving roles. We will concentrate on the critical self-concept formation period of middle childhood (ages 6-8) within family and educational environments, which are pivotal in shaping gender role socialization. Utilizing a mixed-methods longitudinal design, we aim to:

  • Investigate the development of gender beliefs related to communion and agency during middle childhood and their connection to children's career aspirations.
  • Examine the influence of family and peer gender socialization practices on the formation of children's gender beliefs and career ambitions.
  • Assess the impact of exposure to non-traditional parental gender role models on children's gender beliefs and aspirations.
  • Analyze the effects of interactions with peers of different genders on the development of less traditional gender beliefs and career aspirations.

Data will be collected through yearly assessments at ages 6, 7, and 8, involving 150 Dutch families. A diverse sample will be recruited through various channels to ensure representation across different backgrounds.

Qualifications:

We seek candidates who:

  • Hold (or are close to obtaining) a (Research) Master's degree in pedagogical sciences, developmental psychology, social psychology, or a related discipline.
  • Possess experience and interest in quantitative research methodologies, including longitudinal surveys and statistical analysis of longitudinal data.
  • Have familiarity with programming questionnaire surveys and experimental tasks.
  • Demonstrate knowledge in the fields of gender inequality and socialization.
  • Exhibit strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Communicate effectively in both English and Dutch, with sufficient fluency in Dutch to conduct research with children and parents.
