About the Role

VU Amsterdam is seeking a highly motivated PhD researcher to join our team in the field of microbial metabolism and fermentation. The successful candidate will be responsible for optimizing and predicting fermentation outcomes, including the identification and characterization of relevant microorganisms, generating omics data, and applying advanced data analysis.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and carry out experiments with state-of-the-art analysis in molecular microbiology, omics technologies, systems biology, and bioinformatics
  • Data analysis and interpretation
  • Give scientific presentations internally and at scientific meetings
  • Write scientific publications leading to a dissertation
  • Supervise bachelor and master students
  • Teach students

Requirements

  • Master's degree in MSc, specializing in molecular microbiology, biotechnology, biochemistry, bio(physics), systems biology, or related
  • Experience in working in a microbiological or biochemical laboratory
  • Strong interest in metabolism, high-throughput microbiological technologies, and pathway analysis
  • Excellent planning, analytical, and writing skills
  • Good team worker

  • A salary of €2,000.00 to €3,000.00 gross per month in the fourth year, for a full-time employment
  • An employment contract of initially 1 year, which can be extended to a total of 4 years

We also offer attractive fringe benefits and arrangements, including a full-time 38-hour working week, holiday leave entitlement, 8% holiday allowance, 8.3% end-of-year bonus, solid pension scheme, contribution to commuting expenses, and an optional model for designing a personalized benefits package.
