About the Job
VU Amsterdam is seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join our research team in the field of microbial metabolism and fermentation of plant-based protein. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of novel plant-based food products with improved taste, texture, and nutritional value.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and conduct experiments using state-of-the-art analysis in molecular microbiology, omics technologies, systems biology, and bioinformatics.
- Analyze and interpret data to identify relevant microorganisms, enzymes, and pathways for plant-based fermentations.
- Predict microbial behavior of single and mixed cultures, and design microbial communities with optimized and predefined functionalities.
- Supervise bachelor and master students, and teach students in the field of molecular microbiology and biochemistry.
Requirements
- Master's degree in MSc, specializing in molecular microbiology, biotechnology, biochemistry, bio(physics), systems biology, or related fields.
- Experience in working in a microbiological or biochemical laboratory.
- Strong interest in metabolism, high-throughput microbiological technologies, and pathway analysis.
- Excellent planning, analytical, and writing skills.
- Good team worker.
What We Offer
VU Amsterdam offers a challenging position in a socially engaged organization. As a PhD student, you will contribute to education, research, and service for a better world. In return for your efforts, we offer:
- A salary of €2,000.00 and maximum €3,000.00 gross per month in the fourth year, for a full-time employment.
- An employment contract of initially 1 year. If there is sufficient perspective, this will be extended to a total of 4 years. Your dissertation at the end of the fourth year forms the end of your employment contract.
Additional Benefits
- A full-time 38-hour working week comes with a holiday leave entitlement of 20 hours per year. If you choose to work 40 hours, you have 96 extra holiday leave hours on an annual basis. For part-timers, this is calculated pro rata.
- 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
