PhD Student in Microbial Metabolism and Fermentation of Plant-Based Proteins

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join our research team at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. The successful candidate will be involved in the development of novel plant-based fermentation technologies, with a focus on microbial metabolism and fermentation processes.
The PhD student will work under the supervision of our team leader and will be responsible for designing and conducting experiments, analyzing data, and interpreting results. The candidate will also be expected to contribute to the writing of scientific publications and to present research findings at international conferences.
The project is part of the FERMI consortium, which aims to improve the predictability of fermentation processes for the production of tasty, healthy, and sustainable plant-based foods. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in a dynamic and interdisciplinary research environment, collaborating with experts from various fields, including molecular microbiology, omics technologies, systems biology, and bioinformatics.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and conduct experiments with state-of-the-art analysis in molecular microbiology, omics technologies, systems biology, and bioinformatics
- Analyze and interpret data
- Contribute to the writing of scientific publications
- Present research findings at international conferences
Requirements:
- Master's degree in a relevant field, such as molecular microbiology, biotechnology, biochemistry, or systems biology
- Experience in working in a microbiological or biochemical laboratory
- Strong interest in microbial metabolism, high-throughput microbiological technologies, and pathway analysis
- Excellent planning, analytical, and writing skills
- Good team worker
What We Offer:
- A challenging position in a socially engaged organization
- A salary of € 2.872,00 and maximum € 3.670,00 gross per month in the fourth year, for a full-time employment
- An employment contract of initially 1 year. If there is sufficient perspective, this will be extended to a total of 4 years. Your dissertation at the end of the fourth year forms the end of your employment contract.
