Job Description

We are seeking a highly qualified and experienced researcher to join our team as an Assistant Professor of Colonial Environmental History and Decolonial Futures. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching and conducting research on colonial environmental history, with a focus on the intersections of colonization and environmental extraction.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and conduct independent research on colonial environmental history and its implications for imagining decolonial futures.
  • Pursue external funding for research, including grants from research councils and national and European funding agencies.
  • Contribute to and develop national and international research networks and other forms of cooperation.
  • Teach courses in Dutch and English in the Bachelor's and Master's programmes in History.
  • Supervise Bachelor and Master theses and tutor students, as well as co-supervise PhD theses.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of the broader teaching programmes in the department.
  • Participate in committees and working groups, and carry out departmental administrative tasks as directed.
Requirements
  • PhD in history or a related discipline in the social sciences and humanities.
  • Clear potential for developing a strong publication record and obtaining external research and/or project grants.
  • International academic network in the research area and in the field of heritage institutions concerned, or a willingness to develop one.
  • Experience with research-led teaching in a higher education context and a strong commitment to personal development in teaching.
  • Organisational experience and a willingness to take an active part in the administrative and collegial life in the department.
  • Good command of Dutch and English, with the ability to acquire an active and passive command of Dutch within the first two years of employment.
What We Offer

We offer a permanent employment contract upon a satisfactory evaluation following a temporary employment contract of a maximum of 18 months, with a probationary period of two months. The employment is for 38 hours per week, with a salary ranging from €4,334 to €6,449 gross per month, depending on relevant experience. We also offer excellent opportunities for study and personal development, including the opportunity to attain the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) and participate in the Dutch as a Second Language programme II.
