Job Description

We are seeking a highly qualified and experienced researcher to join our team as an Assistant Professor of Colonial Environmental History and Decolonial Futures. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching and conducting research on colonial environmental history, with a focus on decolonial futures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and conduct independent research on colonial environmental history and its implications for decolonial futures, resulting in academic publications in peer-reviewed international journals and/or books.
  • Actively pursue external funding for research, including funding from research councils and European organizations.
  • Contribute to and develop national and international research networks and other forms of cooperation.
  • Develop, coordinate, and teach courses in the Bachelor's and Master's programmes in History, including courses on environmental history and decolonial perspectives.
  • Supervise Bachelor and Master theses and tutor students, as well as co-supervise PhD theses.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of the broader teaching programmes in the department.
  • Participate in committees and working groups, and carry out departmental administrative tasks as directed.
Requirements
  • PhD in history or a related discipline in the social sciences and humanities.
  • Clear potential for developing a strong publication record and obtaining external research and/or project grants.
  • International academic network in the research area and in the field of heritage institutions concerned, or a willingness to develop one.
  • Experience with research-led teaching in a higher education context and a strong commitment to personal development in teaching.
  • Organisational experience and a willingness to take an active part in the administrative and collegial life in the department.
  • Good command of Dutch and English, with the ability to acquire an active and passive command of Dutch within the first two years of employment.
What We Offer
  • Permanent employment upon a satisfactory evaluation following a temporary employment contract of a maximum of 18 months.
  • A salary ranging from €4,334 to €6,449 gross per month, depending on relevant experience.
