PhD Researcher in Isolated Power Supplies for Gate Drivers

Background and Objective
The increasing presence of power electronics converters in medium-voltage (MV) and high-voltage (HV) power grids has significant implications for the design of gate-driving units. The power supply of these units is crucial for controlling and monitoring the state of semiconductor devices. However, the isolation of auxiliary gate-driving power supplies requires special consideration, especially for DC-link voltage levels above 10kV.
Research Challenges
This project involves the investigation of two main parts: circuit topologies and IPT coil configurations. The main goals are to realize auxiliary power supplies with a small form factor and low coupling capacitance between the IPT coils to minimize electromagnetic interference. Specifically, we foresee the following research contributions:
- Benchmarking of different circuit architectures for the gate-driving isolated power supplies, evaluating metrics such as power transfer efficiency, fault tolerance, and modularity.
- Multi-objective optimization of the IPT coils using a strongly physics-informed approach combined with machine learning/AI methodologies, considering different geometries, materials, and structures.
- Experimental verification of the analytical models and simulation results.
- Generalization of the found solutions to other converter topologies used in MV and HV applications.
Role and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will work as a PhD student in the Electromechanics and Power Electronics group at Eindhoven University of Technology. The role involves conducting research, developing new ideas, and collaborating with the team to achieve the project goals.
Requirements and Qualifications
We are looking for candidates with a strong analytical background, solid mathematical and multi-physics knowledge, and excellent problem-solving abilities for power electronics and electromechanics systems. The ideal candidate will have a MSc degree in Electrical and/or Power Engineering, a strong command of the English language, and excellent scientific writing skills.
Working Conditions
The position offers a full-time employment for four years, with an intermediate evaluation after nine months. The salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, scale P.
