PhD Researcher in Multiscale Modeling of Canvas Paintings

2 maanden geleden

Eindhoven, Noord-Brabant, Nederland Eindhoven University of Technology Voltijd

Position Overview

This role is part of the VANGOGH research initiative, aimed at unraveling and forecasting the deterioration of canvas artworks through a comprehensive multiscale and multiphysics approach, funded by the European Research Council (ERC Starting Grant). We are assembling a group of skilled and passionate researchers to engage in this innovative interdisciplinary research program.

Project Context

Canvas paintings embody an invaluable cultural heritage. However, from an engineering standpoint, these artworks are complex, heterogeneous systems exposed to intricate loading conditions resulting from the interplay of various physical forces. This multifaceted environment can lead to several degradation issues, such as surface wrinkling, cracking, delamination, and paint flaking, which significantly impact the visual appeal, structural integrity, and longevity of the pieces.

Main Objectives

  • Develop a multiscale hygro-thermo-mechanical constitutive model for paint and canvas materials based on the effective response of three-dimensional representative volume elements of the heterogeneous systems.
  • Investigate local, microstructural instability mechanisms within the canvas material.
  • Create a multiscale framework addressing multiphysics instability in the canvas, along with cracking and delamination in the paint, focusing on the interrelations between these phenomena.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will work within the chair of Applied Mechanics, Department of the Built Environment, which specializes in education and research related to mechanics, tackling multiscale, multiphysics, and optimization challenges pertinent to the built environment. This chair is affiliated with the Graduate School of Engineering Mechanics, Netherlands, which provides PhD students with an advanced training curriculum in engineering mechanics, closely linked to cutting-edge research themes.

The successful applicant will collaborate closely with fellow PhD students engaged in various aspects of the degradation response of cultural heritage materials.

This project is integrated within NICAS (Netherlands Institute for Conservation, Art and Science) and has garnered support from significant national and international museums and cultural heritage organizations.

Qualifications

  • A motivated and talented researcher with strong analytical skills, initiative, and creativity.
  • A Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computational Mechanics, Mathematical Engineering, or a related field.
  • A solid foundation in mechanics of materials and multiscale, multiphysics methodologies is highly preferred.
  • A keen interest in participating in an interdisciplinary project that applies mechanical principles to cultural heritage.
  • Excellent proficiency in both oral and written English.

Employment Conditions

This position offers a meaningful opportunity within a dynamic and ambitious university environment, characterized by interdisciplinary collaboration and an international network. The successful candidate will benefit from:

  • Full-time employment for a duration of four years, with an evaluation after nine months. Teaching responsibilities will comprise 10% of the role.
  • A competitive salary and benefits package in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, scale P (minimum €2,770, maximum €3,539).
  • An annual bonus of 8.3% and vacation pay of 8%.
  • Access to high-quality training programs and support aimed at fostering the development of independent, self-aware scientific researchers.
  • Excellent technical infrastructure, on-campus childcare, and sports facilities.
  • Reimbursement for commuting, remote work, and internet expenses.
  • A dedicated Staff Immigration Team and a tax compensation scheme for international candidates.
