Mechanical Engineering Internship: Redesign of Optical Fiber Packaging

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Mechanical Engineering student to join our team as an intern. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a challenging project that involves redesigning the packaging of optical fibers.
Background InformationThe Opto-mechanical Competence Group at ASML is responsible for collecting and sharing opto-mechanical knowledge with design engineers. The Optical Fiber team focuses on opto-mechanical design principles for optical fibers, and we are looking for a student to help us improve the packaging of these fibers.
Your AssignmentThe goal of this project is to investigate the transport-related damage of optical fibers and propose design improvements to reduce the number of damaged fibers. The successful candidate will work closely with our team to gather data, analyze the results, and develop a plan to improve the packaging.
Your Tasks- Familiarize yourself with existing fiber packaging and related design standards;
- Investigate transport and packaging-related optical fiber damage;
- Investigate how packaging can be improved and propose design concepts;
- Prepare drawings and documentation (so-called TPD), which can be used to get the packaging modified;
- Document and evaluate the test procedure;
- Order, build, and test the design (if timing allows).
To be a match for this internship, you:
- Are pursuing your bachelor's or master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related;
- Are solution-oriented and have a hands-on mentality;
- Have experience with/ an interest in opto-mechanical designs;
- Have some CAD modeling experience (preferably NX);
- Have good English communication skills (verbal and written).
