This project aims to develop groundbreaking technologies for next-generation high-tech equipment, supporting the growth and development of important Dutch high-tech sectors.
BackgroundAs the complexity of electronic and photonic circuits increases, so does the need for advanced methods of connecting these circuits to the outside world. Laser-based methods can help print finer structuring required for bonding and assembly of these chips. Laser-induced forward transfer (LIFT) is an innovative Additive Manufacturing process that transfers a small volume of a thin donor film to a substrate via a laser beam.
Your ChallengeIn this project, you will investigate novel methods for laser-assisted soldering of circuit elements that can improve the assembly of heterogeneous systems of electronic and photonic chips. You will develop a setup to enable the laser-assisted transfer and analyze printed materials at the Chair of Laser Processing, contributing to the use of these materials in real integrated circuit systems to decrease the size of these features.
Requirements- You have a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, Photonics, Electrical or Materials Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Good knowledge of fundamental aspects of laser-material processing, with applied knowledge in laser micromachining being an advantage.
- Experience in using a range of technologies/techniques for surface characterization, such as SEM, EDX, AFM, etc., would be an advantage.
- Ability to work in a laboratory environment and undertake experimental research.
- Good knowledge/demonstrated awareness of (numerical) modeling.
- Excellent analysis skills and an analytical mindset, as well as excellent communication skills, including written.
- English language proficiency, with a minimum overall score of 6.5 in IELTS or TOEFL.
- We offer a four-year full-time PhD position.

- A starting salary of € 2.770,- gross per month in the first year and increasing to € 3.539,- gross per month in the fourth year.
- An annual holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary, and an annual year-end bonus of 8.3%.

- Minimum of 40 leave days per annual year in case of full-time employment.
