Fiber Optic Network Technician

As a Fiber Optic Network Technician at Zayo, you will be responsible for the installation, testing, and maintenance of fiber optic networks. Your duties will include:

  • Locating and marking underground utilities using specialized equipment.
  • Participating in conference calls and meetings to discuss project details and processes.
  • Performing installation and commissioning of optical transmission systems.
  • Conducting OTDR, Ethernet, BER, and SONET acceptance testing.
  • Assisting the Zayo Engineering department with network construction activities and required Fiber Engineering paperwork.
  • Monitoring contractor and subcontractor activities, including conduit installation, cable placement, and splicing.
  • Providing preliminary site surveys for building entrance construction requirements and equipment space availability.
  • Providing support for all contractor splicing activities, including continuity testing, OTDR trace analysis, and optical power meter data of fiber optic cable.
  • Responsible for installation and testing of fiber optic patch cords.
  • Performing cable splicing and fiber acceptance testing.
  • Monitoring contractor, vendor, and customer co-location installations, equipment placement, and testing.
  • Proactively seeking and identifying potential network problems and addressing these issues before they become service-affecting events.
  • Participating in local on-call schedule rotation.

Requirements:

  • Must reside within 25 miles of the Chicago, IL, and Elkhart, IN, fiber route and be able to get to Chicago in two hours or less.
  • Minimum of two years of experience installing, testing, or turning up a variety of telecommunications equipment, including SONET, TDM, DWDM, and IP.
  • Experience with Underground Utility Markings, Construction Monitoring, and Construction Inspection.
  • Experience with Metrotech vLocML2 or equivalent Fiber Optic Cable Locator.
  • Proficient in the troubleshooting and maintenance of various types of equipment.
  • Strong technical, mechanical, and electrical background and familiarity with major manufacturers of transport equipment, high-voltage electrical systems, DC power plants, and critical infrastructure.
  • Understanding of telecommunications standards (ITU, IEEE, NEBS) and strong analytical, technical, and customer skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents, such as OSHA/Company safety rules, MSDS, MOPs, process and procedure documents, and vendor documentation.
  • Ability to write routine reports, fill out documentation, and effectively communicate with customers, management, peers, and contractors.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations and possess deductive reasoning skills.
  • Able to work well with internal and external peers on daily tasks and responsibilities towards a common goal.
  • Ability to cover various work assignments during a variety of work hours, including day and night time activities, and commit to long hours of work when necessary.
  • Operates company vehicle in accordance with safe driving practices and ensures routine maintenance is performed on the vehicle per defined schedule.
  • Ability to pass MVR check and maintain eligibility to operate a company-issued vehicle per our policy.
