PhD Researcher: Unraveling the Dynamics of Ubiquitin-Processing Enzymes

3 dagen geleden

Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Nederland AMOLF Voltijd

The Research Position at AMOLF is available for an outstanding experimental physicist or chemist to contribute to a cutting-edge project in single-molecule biophysics.

Project Overview

This project aims to elucidate the dynamic mechanisms underlying the function of ubiquitin-processing enzymes, specifically Cdc48/p97. The researcher will employ optical tweezers and single-molecule fluorescence techniques to visualize the binding, unfolding, and translocation of ubiquitin molecules through the central pore of these enzymes.

The study will focus on understanding how these enzymes select target proteins marked with specific polyubiquitin chains, which can exhibit diverse linkages, topologies, and biochemical modifications. This research has far-reaching implications for our understanding of protein degradation, membrane remodeling, and DNA replication regulation.

In this role, you will work closely with the Tans group at AMOLF, which has been at the forefront of studying chaperone-guided protein folding using optical tweezers. You will have the opportunity to develop new experimental schemes, analyze complex temporal data, formulate new models, and explain your findings in high-level scientific papers.

Job Requirements

We are looking for a highly motivated and talented individual with a strong background in experimental physics or chemistry. The ideal candidate should have experience with single-molecule techniques, programming skills to handle complex data, and excellent verbal and written English skills.

A Master's degree is required to ensure eligibility for a Dutch PhD examination. We offer a stimulating work environment, access to state-of-the-art facilities, and opportunities for professional growth and development.

Working Conditions
  • The position is full-time (40 hours/week) for four years.
  • The salary is €27,811 gross per month, plus benefits.
  • After successful completion of the PhD research, a PhD degree will be granted at Delft University of Technology.
  • Funding is available to attend international conferences.
  • AMOLF assists with housing, visa applications, and transport costs.
