Postdoctoral Researcher: Investigating Antimicrobial Resistance in Aquatic Environments

3 weken geleden

Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Nederland VU Amsterdam Voltijd

Our Research

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing concern worldwide, increasing morbidity, mortality, and healthcare expenditures. The aquatic environment serves as a critical reservoir and dissemination route for antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs). In this context, in vitro and in silico methodologies are essential for aquatic AMR surveillance and chemical risk assessment.

About the Position

We seek a highly motivated and talented postdoctoral researcher to join our team at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. The successful candidate will contribute to two research projects related to the environmental dimension of AMR. The primary focus will be on developing an in vitro bioassay for AMR selection potential of water samples within the NOSTRA project. Additionally, the candidate will use experimental results to develop an in silico mechanistic model of the relationship between antibiotic exposures and AMR selection.

Your Responsibilities

  • Develop a bioassay by applying molecular techniques such as cloning, expression of fluorescent proteins in bacteria, and cell sorting.
  • Run in vitro bioassays on water samples.
  • Mechanistic modeling of chemical toxicokinetics and dynamics.
  • AMR and antibiotics impact assessments for the local population and environment.

Your Profile

  • PhD in (eco)toxicology with microbiological affinity or PhD in microbiology with (eco)toxicological affinity.
  • Knowledge of and experience with molecular techniques such as transformations, cloning, and cell sorting.
  • Affinity with in vitro toxicity testing, preferably with bacterial culturing techniques.
  • Extensive experience in mechanistic biological and chemical modeling.

What We Offer

  • A challenging position in a socially engaged organization.
  • A salary of minimum € 4,350.00 (Scale 10) to a maximum of € 5,069.00 (Scale 10) gross per month, based on a full-time basis.
  • A position for at least 0.8 FTE, with a contract duration of 22 months.

We also offer a range of attractive fringe benefits and regulations, including a full-time 38-hour working week with a holiday leave entitlement, 8% holiday allowance, 8.3% end-of-year bonus, and more.
