Nijmegen, Gelderland, Nederland Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics Voltijd

Position Overview

The Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics is seeking a dedicated PhD candidate to engage in groundbreaking research within the Multimodal Language Department. This project focuses on the intricate systems of reference utilized in various languages, exploring how these systems facilitate joint attention and social cognition among speakers.

Research Focus

Reference is a fundamental aspect of language, essential for effective communication. This research initiative will delve into how different languages employ reference systems, such as demonstratives and pronouns, to coordinate attention and convey meaning. Key questions include:

  • How do speakers from diverse linguistic backgrounds integrate reference systems with gestural communication?
  • In what ways do speakers monitor joint attention during the production and interpretation of referential expressions?

By examining these questions, the project aims to uncover potential cross-linguistic variations in referential communication.

Methodological Approach

The research will utilize a variety of methodologies, including the compilation of a corpus of naturalistic dialogues to analyze reference systems in speech, gesture, and eye gaze behavior. This corpus will also inform the development of innovative AR and VR studies, allowing for experimental validation of theoretical claims in a controlled yet ecologically valid setting.

Interdisciplinary Team

The project will be led by a team of experts, including specialists in cross-linguistic multimodal language use, experimental pragmatics, and multimodal communication. This collaborative environment will foster interdisciplinary research and provide a rich learning experience.

Candidate Requirements

Applicants should possess:

  • A high-quality Research Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g., psycholinguistics, cognitive science, linguistics).
  • Linguistic knowledge of one or more target languages with distinct reference systems.
  • Experience in corpus linguistics, psycholinguistics, or multimodal communication.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Familiarity with programming languages and tools for data analysis.
  • A willingness to engage in interdisciplinary research.

What We Offer

The successful candidate will receive:

  • A full-time position with competitive salary and benefits.
  • Access to state-of-the-art research facilities and resources.
  • Opportunities for professional development through training and conferences.

This position presents a unique opportunity to contribute to significant research in the field of multimodal language studies while developing valuable skills for an academic career.
