Radiation Science Lead for Space Exploration

About the Position:


We are seeking a highly skilled Radiation Science Lead to join our team at the European Space Agency. As a key member of our Human and Robotic Exploration Programmes, you will play a critical role in shaping the direction of our radiation research activities.



Key Responsibilities:


  • Develop and manage a comprehensive radiation research roadmap, ensuring alignment with the Explore2040 Strategy.
  • Lead the definition of experimental and scientific requirements for space radiation research activities implemented by ESA, coordinating science teams with international partners as required.
  • Coordinate the definition and implementation of radiation research activities across the science offices, including data analysis and interpretation, and identifying consequences.
  • Coordinate scientific development and exploitation of propagation models of radiation in the heliosphere and transport of radiation through shielding for mission planning, design, and operational forecasts of the environment.
  • Support the creation of tools for planning safe crew operations in deep space, working closely with ESA's Space Medicine Team, particularly in relation to radiation protection services.
  • Act as ESA Project Scientist for specific flight projects and research activities in ground-based facilities, selecting and working with external scientific teams.


Requirements:

To be successful in this role, you will need a Ph.D. in a relevant domain and strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. You must also be able to foster cooperation within and across teams throughout the Directorate and the organisation.
